My daughter has been attending a private school for the past 14
years. For the past 6 years, she has had
to ride a bus to her campus that would a little over an hour. While traveling that long on a bus; students
can find many things to occupy themselves.
Sometimes that can be a little scary to know what it is that they are
doing to keep themselves occupied during this time. Her school has taken measures to give
students every opportunity to take advantage of the time they have and get some
of their work completed before they get back home in the afternoon. A few years ago, they added wi-fi networks to
each bus (with firewalls) and they have made many other enhancements since.
Her school has been on the forefront of this because now many
other schools are starting to do the same thing that her school has done. I don’t think that we need to treat buses as
informal classrooms as soon as the students get on the bus, but there is
something to say about giving them an opportunity to complete homework, correct
the previous nights homework, read, or study for upcoming test.
During the time that my daughter has had to ride the bus to
school, I have witnessed a decrease in the amount of homework that is brought
home at the end of the day. She feels
better prepared at times for test when she gets the time to review on the bus
as she travels to school. Her work ethic
has increased even more and the time management skills that she has learned has
even spread to other aspects of her life outside of school.
