This is the final post of the conversation I had with the board
member in my district about the power of the school board. of the board in the
county in which I live. I asked three
questions and this was the last:
3. What is the relationship between the superintendent and the local
board?
This was his
answer to the last question asked. This board member feels that the
relationship of the superintendent to the local board is important. He feels
that the relationship that the board has to the superintendent’s management of
the operation, organization, and resources of the district is easy. They trust him to do his job! This
relationship helps the board be able to decide the funding necessary for the
staffing of the district’s schools. He
stated that the superintendent makes recommendations for staffing and then the
board votes on the spending they feel needed. Finally, the board sets policy on
making sure that the superintendent is securing the necessary materials for the
functionality of the schools and the education of its students. He feels that it is only through the
superintendent’s work and recommendations that the board can make valid
decisions on how to spend the taxpayer’s money for the education of its
districts students.
Although there was
not an explicit answer given to the board having too much power; he did feel that
there was a good balance in the district and he was going to do what he could
to make sure that this balance remained to make sure the district remained as
successful as it has been over the past years.
